WHAT IS PULMONARY REHABILITATION?
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a program designed for people who have chronic lung disease. Its primary goal is to enable people to achieve and maintain their maximum level of independence and functioning. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs focus on people who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Chronic bronchitis and Emphysema, Cystic Fibrosis, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Decreased Lung Function in most Post-Covid19 cases.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is for you if you have a chronic lung disease or another condition that makes it hard for you to breathe and limits your activities.
- Reducing shortness of breath
- Increasing exercise and daily activities tolerance
- Promoting a sense of well-being
- Decreasing long term disability and reinstate back to work
- Decreasing the number of hospitalizations
- ASTHMA is a long-term disease of the lungs. It causes your airways to get inflamed and narrow, and it makes it hard to breathe. Severe asthma can cause trouble talking or being active.
- Have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The two main types are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. In COPD, your airways (tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs) are partially blocked. This makes it hard to get air in and out.
- Have an interstitial lung disease such as sarcoidosis and pulmonary fibrosis. These diseases cause scarring of the lungs over time. This makes it hard to get enough oxygen.
- Have cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is an inherited disease that causes thick, sticky mucus to collect in the lungs and block the airways.
- Need lung surgery. You may have PR before and after lung surgery to help you prepare for and recover from the surgery.
- Have a muscle-wasting disorder that affects the muscles used for breathing. An example is muscular dystrophy.
- Pulmonary rehabilitation both before and after surgery may be beneficial for people undergoing lung resection, people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease undergoing surgery, and people with severe lung disease undergoing lung transplantation.
What does pulmonary rehabilitation include?
When you first start pulmonary rehabilitation (PR), your team of health care provider will want to learn more about your health. You will have lung function test, exercise, and possibly blood tests, go over your medical history and current treatments to create a plan that is right for you.
- Respiratory Therapy like Lung Expansion, Chest Physical Therapy and techniques to improve your breathing that may increase your oxygen levels and keep your airways open longer
- Exercise training to improve your endurance and muscle strength
- Nutritional counseling, being either overweight or underweight can affect your breathing.
- Education about use of inhaled medications and oxygen therapy.
- Techniques you can use to save your energy.
